Looking Forward
Dear ISIAQ member:
At the end of the first year, I would like to share with you my perceptions of how we have fared as ISIAQ Board of Directors in our efforts to address the aims I set at the beginning of our mandate. In a word, I think that we have done well. But more importantly, with your assistance and cooperation, I believe that we have set the stage for still greater progress. Last September you have received a detailed account of our activities. In what follows, I lay out some of our accomplishments in the three major areas that I identified at the beginning of the year. I ask that you be mindful throughout that our goals are long term in character and that to realize them we must undertake a sustained mutual effort.
Preserving the scientific character of ISIAQ
The Society’s scientific foundations are strong. The Indoor Air Journal has established itself as the leading publication in the field reaching an impact factor of 2.035. The number of issues published in year has increased to six plus supplements.
Regarding the merge with the International Academy of Indoor Air Sciences, the draft of the framework for ISIAQ and IAIAS joint operations was sent to all members for comments this past summer. At the 2004 AGM, held in Philadelphia (PA), the BOD proposed a motion to membership for vote on the merger of the two organizations. The Assembly voted in favor of the merge and charged the leadership to develop the amendments necessary to affect the merge. This merge will offer ISIAQ the opportunity to establish a category of “Fellow”. This designation recognizes scientific and/or professional contributions that advance the knowledge and/or practice, in the field of indoor air science.
Visibility growth
This past year we have been very successful in teaming with other organizations and we plan to continue to do so. The new policy for sponsorship will bring immediate financial benefits to those attending those events and to the Society.
Next year we will focus on working with the Chapters’ chairs to enable a more dynamic and flexible relationships to create opportunities that are productive for the Society and for the Chapters as well. This process will take a few months and a general meeting is being scheduled in occasion of IA 05.
Strategic alliances
This is a long-term objective in which ISIAQ has been very successful by bringing its message with the Healthy Building xx conferences. I see this role expanding as the merge with the Academy finalizes by adding the Indoor Air xx conferences as the other primary venue. The broad strategy is to develop close relationship with administrators in several institutions. The trust and understanding developed through these relationships (which I envisage going well beyond small-scale bilateral exchanges) will enable us to respond jointly, collectively, and (most importantly) in timely fashion to the opportunities and challenges.
I hope for the development of a new operational framework for the Task Forces (TF). This new framework should create more flexibility in TF operation and become a venue for ISIAQ to team with other entities in responding to ad hoc/regional topics.
Regarding ISIAQ finances, we have had a good year and we are focusing on achieving a better cash flow as recommended by the auditors and trustees, and more importantly the BOD has brought final closure to the matter of Healthy Buildings 1997 and the financial loss associated with it. The BOD, leveraging on the negotiations conducted by the previous ISIAQ Presidents, has been able to further reduce the debt with VT and negotiate an agreement to use those money to sponsor scientists to travel to Indoor Air 05.
Thank you for all you have done to further our progress this year we wish you a peaceful 2005.
