Meeting report of the 1st ISIAQ Task Force Meeting on Indoor Air Research and Building Practice Monterey, July 2nd, 2002

1. The meeting lasted one hour only, because of obligations of participants during the conference.

2. Tom Follin presents a letter he wrote to ISIAQ with his vision to the problem how to improve the society to make it closer to the members needs. As I do not have a digital version of this letter I ask TOM to forward it to all people in the mailing list.

3. Peter Luscuere presents a short note in preparation of this meeting. This note is given as an appendix to this report.

4. The discrepancy felt amongst TF members between the relative scientifically content of the congress papers and the needs from building practise (including facility management) is widely supported.

5. TF members identify the need to focus on synergy between practitioners and scientists in stead of confrontation between parties.
6. TF members identify the wish to include other disciplines in the discussion, like:
    * More scientists
    * Architects
    * Construction consultants
    * Medical doctors
    * Building users
    * Facility managers

7. Part of the problem is a mismatch between scientists and practitioners. It starts with differences in language but also the lack of knowledge of each other's worlds and understanding of each other's methods, problems and funding contributes to it. Luscuere will work out a small contribution on this subject.

8. The following possibilities for gap-bridging initiatives were already mentioned and discussed briefly:
8.1 In Denmark, a monthly indoor air forum is operational. Scientists and practitioners are brought together which clearly results in better practical applicability of research results.
8.2 "Practical applicability" of the results could be an explicit factor during paper selection and -reviewing with forthcoming conferences.
8.3 In addition to the required "keywords" authors should also indicate the "Applicability of the results".
8.4 Various discussion forums could be established.
8.5 Describing interesting subjects/problems from practise can positively influence research agendas. Example: How seven different basic performance criteria from buildings can be simultaneous fulfilled and objectively verified?
8.6 During future conferences specialised sessions could be programmed.

9. Attention is asked for feedback of research not only to building practitioners and - operators/facility managers, but also to regulatory authorities.

10. Three areas of interest are mentioned:
    * Building/construction/installations
    * Behaviour
    * New solutions/innovations

11. All TF members are convinced that this TF will not end in large written contributions. All activities will be directed to activities/interventions direct leading to:
    * Better understanding between scientists and practitioners
    * Better applicability of research results in practise

12. In the coming period all TF members are asked to communicate through e-mail regarding ideas as mentioned under 8, or to come with proposals how to organise contributions to the objectives/goals of this new TF.

13. After some discussion several members proposed Luscuere to be the chair of this new TF. All members present supported this proposal including myself as the new chair.
I would like to ask those members not present during this meeting if they support this proposal and invite any member of the TF to candidate him- or herself as co-chair to this TF.

14. Finally the name of the TF was agreed upon to be: "Indoor Air Research and Building Practise".

Anyone who has textual comments on this meeting report is invited to send corrections/additions to luscuere@wxs.nl Not necessary to say that all other comments, contributions etc. are welcomed, as described under 12.

I would like to thank everyone for his or her contributions and invite all TF-members to contribute to a successful ISIAQ TF.
